WIFI Directional Antenna

Wifi 2.4GHz Maximum DBI is up to 24dbi for now, check all international brand Cisco, 3Com, D-Link, TP-Link you know the truth, only china small unknown factory dare sell fake 28dbi, 32dbi, 64dbi, 128dbi , tak malu langsung....

Brief intro: (PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE BUY ANY, DON'T SKIP! )
=======
Q1: What's the DIFFERENCE between Directional antenna and Omni-directional antenna?
Omni-directional antenna = provide 1 circle coverage area, like a donut you eat. (Horizontally full 360 degree coverage, but Vertically 40 degree or less coverage (depends on dbi value).
Directional antenna = provide 1 straight line coverage area.
Imagine the difference between a bulb and a torch light.

Q2: What's the BENEFITS of using Directional Antenna:
a) Longer range coverage: if same dbi, e.g. 9dbi omni-directional vs 9dbi directional antenna, directional antenna able to cover longer area than omni-directional antenna.
b) Lesser interference: directional antenna only broadcast/receive through 1 direction only, so not much subject to surrounding signal interference as omni-directional has to sustain during operation.

Q3: What's the APPLICATIONS of Directional Antenna:
a) Long range Signal Broadcasting: use with router, access point, cpe.
b) Long range Wireless Repeating / Bridging (point-to-point/point-to-multipoints): use with router, access point, cpe.
a) Long range Signal Receiving : use with wifi adapter (pci/usb), access point work in AP client/ AP client router mode.

Q4: How to choose SUITABLE directional antenna to use?
Based on your usage purpose in Q3, next to consider 3 main antenna characteristics (NOT JUST HOW MANY dbi)
i) How far (distance): dBi value, higher means further.
ii) How wide (coverage area): angle degree value, horizontally / vertically how many degree? higher means wider.
iii) What type : panel / yagi / patch / parabolic ?

* note 1: dbi selection should based on actual DISTANCE & BLOCKING LEVEL survey. If buying a higher dbi directional antenna but use it at distance not best for it, you would see higher dbi perform worsen than lower dbi antenna at that particular distance. Every dbi got its best usage distance, that's y we can still see manufacturers keep producing antenna from low dbi to high dbi , not just producing highest.
* note 2: For signal broadcasting purpose: angle degree (how wide) is utmost important considering point for ppl to get online through your router/ap, must get at least 30 degree coverage angle. For wireless repeating / bridging, then angle degree (how wide) is less important compare to dbi (how far). Remember that higher dbi always means narrower angle degree!

Q5: How LONG antenna cable to use? 1 meter? 3 meter? 5 meter? 10 meter?
1 rule only to remember: KEEP IT AS SHORT AS POSSIBLE!
Because there is problem of LONGER CABLE = MORE SIGNAL LOSS (dbi loss)!
Normal quality cable (RG58/316) causing more dbi loss per meter (0.7dbi loss/meter) compare to high quality low loss cable (LLC/LMR 200/400) (0.2-0.5dbi loss/meter). So don't be greedy getting 5 / 10 meter of normal cable to use, you would be regret and waste money!
And if you LOSS OVER 3db IN CABLE, TRANSMISSION POWER (mW) of your device DROP HALF! Serious!!!

Q6: Fake or True dbi ? I saw those china made adapters provide plastic antenna say 18dbi, 25dbi and even say 32dbi, is that true of bluffing?
They can say whatever they like in the packaging because no or least control of fake products in CN, but can you ever saw that kind of antenna appear in mature EU/US/global networking market made by international brands like 3Com, Cicso, D-Link, Level-1, TP-Link, etc? Why don't they have it? You know the truth then. Check their catalog/website to see what true antenna are looks like, how many max dbi is being offered for serious wifi networking in real IT world.

Review Test:

Independant test by overseas forumer showned that:
at ~1KM open space, very little differences compare with 16dbi yagi!
below 1KM open space, 14dbi panel outperform 16dbi yagi in terms of signal % quality!

Q: users always ask for longer antenna's coaxial cable such as 5 meter....
A: But do you know longer cable cause more dbi SIGNAL LOSS!!! Best use with 1 meter RG58 come along from manufacturer to minimise cable-length signal-loss problem.

Bcoz 1 meter cable RG58 would cause ~0.7dbi loss in the transmission.
If using 5 meter RG58, means 0.7dbi x5 = 3.5dbi loss!
14dbi panel + 5 meter RG58 = 14dbi - 3.5dbi = 10.5dbi remaining! this is serious!
Why buy high gain antenna but loss in cable transmission? got no high gain in the end!
(ONE MORE THING, IF LOSS OVER 3dbi IN CABLE, TRANSMISSION POWER (mW) REDUCE HALF!


Recommended alternative ways to do 'extension':
a) if using with usb wifi adapter, get 5 meter usb extension cable, that not cause dbi loss.
b) if using with router/ap, get power extension or POE, that not cause dbi loss.

If after trying above methods, still absolutely necessary to extend antenna's coaxial cable:
a) for 4 meter or below, still can use RG58 cable type (if u can compromise).
b) for 5 meter to 10 meter, pls use high grade low loss cable LMR/LLC200 type.
c) for over 10 meter, pls spend money to get highest grade low loss cable LMR/LLC400 type.

How identify original/genuine AMY yagi 18dbi?
1) Insist on original AMY 18dbi box packaging - with printed yagi antenna logo and clear model no. (see pic below)
2) The Horizontal and Vertical beamwidth of original 18dbi AMY is 18 degree, not 20 / 30 degree. (The higher dbi the narrower the beamwidth scope, technical matter can't bluff)
3) The length of original AMY yagi would not exceed 60cm! Other factories are longer.
4) The standard AMY product always come in 1 meter cable, their network engineer insist this length for performance sake (the longer cable the more dbi loss in transmission).


Brief AMY background:
AMY is a technology company with R&D department and manufacturing arm based in China. The company claimed that producing a "true 18dbi yagi" requires 3 fold times that being needed to produce a tradisional 16dbi yagi, therefore the supply of 18dbi yagi won't be as much as 16dbi yagi in same production time frame.

Reason (1) of getting AMY product: AMY stessed that they DO NOT simply add 2 director to a tradisional 16dbi yagi and claim it having 18dbi without going through R&D and complete tuning process. Some china factories's 18dbi yagi are not real 18dbi!!!
